About Me

Freelance photographer and writer based in Kansas City, Missouri + Midwest at large

Clayton Steward is a visual journalist and educator that tells long form stories that capture the human spirit and explore the intersection of people and their environment. His background in Chaplaincy training compliments his studies in art and photography to provide a deeply empathetic and uniquely creative approach to storytelling. He has a belief in collaboration with the people at the end of his lens, but he never strays from telling truth with a camera.

He has an interest in using analog processes such as 35mm film, 4x5 large format film, and alternative processes to present documentary style work in imaginative ways. He works comfortably in State Houses, open fields, homes, on sidelines, and more. Stories are everywhere and Clayton is ready to bring his skillset to the people and places that need their story shared.

Clayton's work has been published in the New York Times, Kansas City Magazine, The Park Record, Deseret News, The Columbia Missourian, The New Territory Magazine and the Clinton Daily Democrat.

His photography has been recognized by Utah's Society of Professional Journalists, College Photographer of the Year and Missouri Press Association. Clayton also had work that was selected for the 27th Annual Kansas City Artists Coalition undergraduate juried exhibition in 2022. His writing and film productions both have also received recognition from Utah's Society of Professional Journalists.

He is proud to be an alum of Missouri Photo Workshop 74 and Montana Photo Workshop 2.

Clayton is available for assignment in Kansas City and the rest of the Midwest and South.
